Towing with the Ridge: the numbers nobody publishes

A 9,500-pound tow rating is only useful if you know what it does to range. We measured it, at full load, and published the result.

Towing roughly halves the range of any vehicle, electric or otherwise. The difference with an electric vehicle is that you notice, because the refueling stop is longer and the network is sparser. So the honest thing to do is publish the towing figure, not the unladen one.

What we measured

A Ridge towing a 7,000-pound twin-axle trailer at a steady 65 mph on a level highway cycle returns 141 miles against its 296-mile unladen rating. That is a 52 percent reduction, and it is consistent with what physics predicts — aerodynamic drag dominates at highway speed, and a trailer is mostly a large flat surface.

At 55 mph the same combination returns 174 miles. Ten miles per hour is worth 33 miles of range when towing, which is the most useful single fact in this article.

The vehicle does the arithmetic for you

Attach a trailer and the Ridge measures the actual load through the hitch and recalculates range against it, rather than applying a fixed penalty. Route planning then places charging stops against the real figure, and selects Current sites with pull-through bays so you do not have to unhitch.

Practical advice

Plan 120-mile legs when towing heavy. Charge to 100 percent before a towing trip — the top 20 percent is slow to add but it is 59 miles you will want. And accept that a towing trip has more stops than it used to; the compensation is that the vehicle does 2,180 pounds of payload and 9.6 kW of site power on the days you are not towing at all.

What 800 volts actually changes about charging

Every manufacturer quotes a peak charging number. Almost none of them quote how long it holds. Here is why the architecture underneath decides the difference.
